In Malaysia, he is a university lecturer and a creative director at a film and media company.
In Taiwan, he is a novelist.
At the age of 36, encouraged by his wife, he left everything behind and went to Korea alone,
becoming once again a beginner student, learning as if he were starting from scratch.
If a fortune teller told you that your year would be “unfavorable,” how would you respond?
Accepting fate quietly and living off a salary is not an option for this middle-aged man. Since hardships cannot be avoided, he simply quit his job and went to Korea to study abroad!
Leaving the tropical equator, he entered a northern country alone to experience the full range of the seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Facing blackboards full of new characters, enduring the sharp shocks of a foreign language and unfamiliar country, and navigating the gaps of age and culture, even the simplest daily tasks—eating, sleeping, doing laundry, studying—became profound personal dramas. Years later, looking back, the middle-aged man who first arrived in Seoul dragging his luggage, “displaced and adrift,” had, under the name “진지홍,” lived through a year and a half full of vibrant experiences and rich encounters.

Reading The Middle-Aged Man’s Korean Journey brought back my own feelings when I first arrived in Korea. At the same Kyung Hee University, I felt the same changes of the Korean seasons. Thanks to this middle-aged man, I revisited memories from nearly thirty years ago. Stepping away from the comfort of home and immersing in a foreign culture, yet still observing and recording life in detail—this is truly admirable. — Lu Hongjin
With sharp insights from a multicultural background and delicate writing, the author unveils the secrets of Korean culture while also highlighting many important considerations in teaching Korean. Anyone intending to study in Korea, whether middle-aged or not, should read this book carefully. — Xiao Yuening
Growth is not only for the young; with determination, anyone can step into a new world!
This middle-aged man’s Korean study abroad journey spans from constant setbacks and awkward situations to being unexpectedly invited to give speeches. This unplanned year and a half became a turning point in his life.
